Is a medical needed to drive a car?
Usually not, but in the questions on the applications for auto insurance it always has a question like: Do you have any physical deformity or disability which would effect your driving? Also, after an age between 65-75 insurance companies will ask you to have a form filled out once every year or so from your physician that you have not medical issues that would prevent you from driving safely. They just want to make sure that you see a doctor and that the doctor's opinion is that you are still able to drive. Different companies use different ages for this to start but usually it ranges between 65 and 75. I often have people call me for quotes for insurance because theirs went up $30 a year or something. If they are 70 years old and have been with a reputable insurance company that they have been with for many years, I will explain that I would love to take over their insurance account but I need to advise them that once you have this type of record with a company and have reached retirement age that I would suggest that they stay with the same company. I explain that if they changed carrier and then had two or three accidents, the company may wonder about their ability to drive and they may be set up for cancellation. But if they had two or three small accidents but they had built a record of years of coverage with no claims then they would be able to look at the account over many years instead of a short time. For this reason I usually
recommend they stay where they are instead of changing companies. I can even show them ways to bring down their premiums on the policy they have now.
