Question

My ex and I have joint custody of our 3 kids. We used to live in IL and have since both moved to WI. Our visitation agreement was filed in IL and we don't have one filed in WI. Is the one from IL valid? What do I do if my ex won't let me see my kids at all? What do I need to do to change it and file it in WI?

Answer

The Illinois order would be valid, but must be registered formally in Wisconsin. If you both now live in Wisconsin, you may also wish to change the order here, especially if you are being denied visitation. There is a specific process to accomplish both of these tasks, so I highly recommend that you consult with an experienced Wisconsin family lawyer. If you are being denied visitation, it is wise to act quickly.
