Question

I am renting a room and want to move out before my 6 month lease expires. If the lease does not state a penalty for leaving early, could I be taken to court for this? I gave the owner of the house a 30 day notice about me leaving and she threatened me and said I cannot leave.

Answer

If you don't have a right in the lease to leave early, you will remain responsible for the rental if you move out even with the 30 day notice. The lease does not have to specify a penalty for the landlord to have a claim against you, it is the lease itself that supports the claim.
