child supportIf my parental rights were terminated, am I still obligated to pay child support?

Question

child support

If my parental rights were terminated, am I still obligated to pay child support?

Answer

Re: child support

Yes. Termination of Parental rights does not absolve you of Parental obligations. If you terminated as part of an agreement with someone else who is a step-parent, then there should be a writing as to that effect and an agreement by that party to care for your child and be finacially responsible for him. However, even then should that party fail in its obligations to your child and the child be placed on public assistance then you would again be obligated to the child. NY is a "Best interest of the child" state. Fairness to the parent is of little consequence in the equation.
