What is ASCII art?

What is ASCII art?
ASCII art is means of creating art through standardized text code with a monotype system font. It was first used as an art form during early network communications when pixel information was too large to transmit over slow modems. It is, "drawn" line by line with characters to produce an overall image. The style of each image is created by using different characters to produce fill, lines and curves.
