Legally can my old landlord charge me more than the security deposit in order to pay for damages and repair? I rented an apartment for 2 years and 8 months and payed a security deposit of $1000. The apartment was in good condition when I moved out except for damage done to the carpet and blinds from my pet. I know that damage is not normal wear and tear, and expected to loose the security deposit. However, now the landlord is not only keeping the $1000 deposit but also demanding I pay around $800 more because all the fees cost more than the security deposit. is this legal and do I have to pay the additional $800??

Yes it is legal for the landlord to demand payment in excess of the deposit if the damages cost more than the deposit. If you do not pay the additional amount the landlord may sue you in small claims court to recover its damages.
