Tell you about diesel electric engines?
It is used on extremely heavy vehicles such as dump trucks in a mine or locomotive. The design is: a diesel engine drives a electric generator. Then the electricity is distributed to electric motors that drive the road wheels. This design eliminates clutches, gearboxes and drive shafts. Today, some ships have similar design. The difference is the electric motors drive propellers instead of road wheels.
