Question

I am considering creating a tabletop roleplaying game (Meaning pencils, paper, and dice) and i am unsure of what i can and cannot copyright, or what should be copyrighted for that matter. After some research i know ideas alone cannot be copyrighted, but i know some RPG's out there are copyrighted, but not sure what is copyrighted material in and of itself. Some games use the same dice system for determining rolls and chance, so i don't think those are either. Can anyone help? There doesn't appear to be much information out there on this.

Answer

You need to discuss your idea with a local intellectual property attorney right away. By the usage of the terms in your posting, you do not fully and properly understand the issues. You obtain copyright protection as soon as you create a unique work of authorship. You are confusing this with a trademark, which is a word(s) and/or symbols that designate a product.

If you would like to discuss any issues further, please feel free to contact my office. The link to my contact information is below. Thank you.
