Is a note in a newsletter considered legal notice? My union apparently put in a newsletter last year that we had 31 days to revoke our membership or we would be enrolled again. This has never been practice. We have always had to sign up. I did not want to be member this year, but since I did not revoke my membership within 31 days, because I dis not know about this, and I was told I owe for all union dues this year. Also, can I be sued for this?
Answer
If there are no specific notice requirements or rules in the union by-laws, the newsletter can suffice since it reaches the membership. You can be sued. However, if you're receiving benefits as a result of the union, why wouldn't you want to stay as a member?
